  • Mumbai-Muscat

My next challenge is to sail from Mumbai to Muscat with an Omani woman, Nashwa al Kindi, from Oman Sail, as my co-skipper. I'm borrowing a beautiful boat, which I hope will convert to sip puff sailing without drilling too many holes.

So I'm getting ready to travel to Muscat next Tuesday, along with all three carers. I will get to meet the man who has managed to build a control system for a 28 foot Dragonfly trimaran whilst on the other side of the world from me. Together we will see whether his system works. Huge thanks to everyone in Auckland, who has helped with the project. It's been a bit of a mammoth effort, and everyone has done it in their spare time. I can't thank you enough.

I met Nash last year when I travelled out to Oman to talk to various groups at Oman Sail. We hit it off immediately and started to plan to do something together. If it were at all possible. I never dreamed that we would end up sailing 850 nautical miles together.

Also on board the boat will be a carer (I may finally have lost my marbles, but my land loving carers have turned out to have remarkably good sea legs) and a yacht master with plenty of experience under his belt to do any sailing only in the case of an emergency. It would just be unsafe to go without this sort of backup. Thanks to Ocean Safety we will be well kitted out with lifejackets and a life raft, although I'm not intending to get in it except during training!

We are leaving from one of the busiest ports around, Mumbai. Raymarine have kitted us out with the latest equipment from autopilot and chart plotter to an AIS system that means at least the boats with radar will be able to see us! I guess that we will have to rely on seeing the rest ourselves.

Mumbai to Muscat is a huge sail, and my first piece of real ocean sailing. If everything goes to plan, then we should be setting off, after lots of sea trials, in about the middle of March.
